RE: Rookie Ferry Question

In 2002 we got off the ferry and got a campsite in Pt. Hardy at the municiple campgrounds. Made a quick trip to the store and when we got back there was an ambulance a few campsites away. Seems a man was taking a walk and a mountain lion jumped on him from a tree and after a battle, he killed it with his 4" folding Buck knife. Ranger said it was the first time he heard of someone killing a lion with a knife. There's a large population of lions in this area. It made the front page of the Pt. Hardy paper.

RE: Rookie Ferry Question

"You've spent the money for an RV, why spend more for sleeping accommodations on a ferry? Friends with us on the return trip chose the ferry option, they visited the stops in the middle of the night, had very limited shore time and of course the tourist traps were open for the tourists. Reboarding after a lay-over is not a sure thing and depends on availability. They were ousted twice to move their rig in the middle of the night to allow egress of a commercial truck. They were very unhappy with the idea."
Horace,
Your friends were the victims of their own poor planning. Didn't they read the ferry schedule? If they did, then they would have known that they were going to arrive and leave in the middle of the night. Many people take the trip of a lifetime and then don't even stay at the towns the ferry stops at for 1 day. If you have a res. then there is no problem with reboarding.
One of the highlights of our trip was sleeping in the chaise lounges, (no charge), and talking to all the people about the adventures they had in AK. Some were commercial fishermen, lumberjacks, NPS rangers, Native Americans and some were adventurous grandmas who had a bag of stale rolls and a big jar of peanut butter. We all shared our food and traded stories.

RE: Rookie Ferry Question

This is a great idea. We took 9 ferries on the way home in 2002. We had a 29' Class C at the time. Visited all the typical stops, (got off and stayed 1-2 night at each place), you will see on your way down, plus Sitka. Then we went over to Prince of Wales Island, down to Prince Rupert, Prince George, Williams Lake and then took the ferry from Bella Coola down to Port Hardy. Camped all the way down to Victoria and one last ferry to Vancouver and back to NY. If you leave your toad home it won't be too bad as far as cost goes. You have to make your reservations waaaaaayyyyy in advance. We used an AK travel agency in Juneau, I think it was called Rainbow Travel for the AMH res. They had one person down at the AMH office on opening morning on the first day when res. would be accepted and another on the phone. The prime times fill up fast. It doesn't cost you any more to do it this way.
As previous people said, you can't sleep in your RV so you have 3 choices. 1 Get a cabin. 2 Bring a small tent and sleeping bags and set it up on the dack. 3 Sleep on chaise lounges that the ferry provides under heat lamps.
Taking the ferries back home is waaaayyyy better than driving the same roads that you drove up.

RE: solution to rving at Js

I know. It's not practical for us either so I guess my solution won't work. I tried. I'm really getting discouraged about RVing lately. Funny, on the road you get the finger, on the lake, you get waves.( pun intended)
Walmart has a whole set of rules too apparently...but I'm not going to open that can of worms.
Funny, I've never gotten the finger in almost 60 yrs. of camping.
Google "WalMart Rv Camping" and you will be able to read all you ever wanted to know about camping in WalMart.
I have a book listing all the WalMarts where you are allowed to camp and a much smaller book listing the WalMarts where you can't camp.
The only complaint I ever heard from a WalMart manager was that he said he wished campers would just camp and not ask his permission because he has to come out of his office each time and use his valuable time to speak to them.

I also suggested putting a sign up to keep slides in. The fellow I spoke to said, to be reasonable, people can actually put their slides out but NOT to extend beyond their mirrors.
I thought you either have your slide "in" or "out" because they don't seal otherwise???
I agree, leave them "in".
Not sure about others, but mine can go out a little or all the way.
All of ours can go out a little or all the way but they don't seal!!!
Check your slides when they are halfway out and you will see that mosquitoes, etc., can come right in.

RE: solution to rving at Js

I called flying js head office a while back because I wanted to know if RVers were welcome and the were not just a TRUCK STOP. They assured me that they have decided to add RVers welcome at some plazas, which means they are equally for Trucks and RVers. I also suggested putting a sign up to keep slides in. The fellow I spoke to said, to be reasonable, people can actually put their slides out but NOT to extend beyond their mirrors. However they don't advertise it because some take advantage. This should give them enough space to get by without disturbing anyone else. Having said that...I still suggest leaving them in...as it seems some vindictive people might spitefully smash into them.
This is not practical for many RVs. For example, when my slides are in they cover the vents where the heat comes out. So, no heat!!!! If you arrive early enough, many times, I have found a spot where 2 of my slides will hang over the grass. Otherwise go to WalMart.

RE: Gas prices cash/credit or debit card

Pentagon Federal Credit Union Visa gives 5% on pay at the pump fuel purchases including diesel with unlimited amounts. If you shop at Kroger and have one with a gas station you can get up to $1.00 a gallon off, deepending on the amount of groceries purchased, and then 5% off the gas too.
Doug and Cassi,
This looks good. I'll use the Pentagon for food and gas and the Costco/American Express for everything else. Thanks, Ed

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a21/jogiba/gas%20prices/149Shell.jpg
With a new Shell Mastercard you would get 10% off on Shell gas so $1.49 Shell gas would cost $1.34 !
Have you had good luck with these gas web sites?
I've tried 3. One in PA, one in CT and one in NY and the prices and info on all three was wrong. The one in New London, CT said it was a truck stop with a store attached, etc., etc., and it was a small 2 pump station so small I couldn't get my 5er into it.

RE: Gas prices cash/credit or debit card

IIRC The federal regulation that prohibited the difference between cash and credit/debit cards expired. So it's on a state by state basis as to whether or not there can be different pricing. NYS does not allow different pricing, but then we have about the highest state taxes on gasoline and diesel that we're almost always above the national average.
Mike,
Almost every gas station on LI has different pricing for cash or credit. Most have a $.06 difference. Our Costco/American Express card gives us back 3% which was up to $.12/gal. and now is down to around $.07.

Thanks, PRT
I just printed it out and put it in my folder. Dillon was $45 and Rowland was $48. Not bad and they are probably in the discount booklets also for less. I just posted this below to Bill. You might be interested in the Best Western I mention. Ed

Wouldn't even consider a motel, just pick a park and turn on the heat. We've even done a Flyin J for an overnight but it will draw 2 sixes down pretty good with the heater running.

Hi Bill,
I was just up by you 2 weeks ago in Balston Spa camping in relative's driveway.
I used to do what you do but now I'm roughing it less. To de-winterize and hook up everything so I can have a nice long hot shower after driving all day would take me just short of an hour. Then to put it all back in order to hit the road, another 40 minutes.
The Best Western I stay at, by Kings Dominion in Va., is only $39, Snowbird discount. I'm lying on the bed watching TV in only 10 minutes. (They have a restaurant attached so you just walk over and have dinner and breakfast, very reasonable. 14,000 snowbirders stay there every year)
If I pay $20 for my campsite, that means I'm going through all that work for only $19, about the cost of a pizza. I have outsmarted myself many times in the past but I won't do it this winter on my way down to the Keys so I'm going to look for a similar deal for a motel on the NC-SC border.

Loking for motel near I-95 North Carolina-S. Carolina border

Hi Folks,
I usually leave L.I. on Jan. 5th and make it down to the Best Western Motel near Kings Dominion in VA.
In the past, we have camped the second night near the NC SC border. We are getting older and the temps. could be in the 30's so we will stay in a motel one more night. Anyone know of a reasonable motel, with room for a fifth wheel, in a safe neighborhood, near the NC-SC border? The last one I choose out of one of those discount booklets you get at the welcome center was in a pretty scary neighborhood with only 2 other rooms occupied.

You might want to keep information on several of the campgrounds handy. You never know where you end up on time going down 95. One traffic jam in DC and it throws your whole time table off.
You're right. In fact, the more I think about it, the temps. could be in the 30's. Anyone know of a reasonable motel, with room for a fifth wheel, in a safe neighborhood, near the NC-SC border? RE: Is September too late to drive to Alaska from the lower 48?

Pete,
I've driven up there 6 times and both months are fine. In the spring, keep a sharp eye out for frost heaves. On your way back, think about taking the BC Ferry from Bella Coola to Port Hardy and then camp all the way down Vancouver Island to Victoria.
